Some of the more advanced inflatable boats, like Zodiac's Fastroller, feature a special High-Pressure inflatable air floor. Made of two layers of fabric, connected by thousands of tiny "drop stitches", this floor can be inflated to a high pressure, creating a floor with rigidity equal to sheet of plywood a fraction of the weight. Best of all, they can be completely deflated and stowed in only minutes without removing any parts. This high pressure air floor is softer on knees and backsides too.

Link] What did you use for communications while sailing? Did you have a satellite phone? We have a laptop, while we are at sea, do you have any suggestions for internet access ( I know this can get vastly expensive, where do you draw the line at spending?). A further simple question. In the the Caribbean, what is the best way to clean fruit & vegetables? I am really looking forward to the markets, but am skeptical about the flies that may (or may not) be crawling over them....

Traditional sailboats are monohulls, but multi-hull catamarans and trimarans are gaining popularity. Monohull boats generally rely on ballast for stability, and generally are known as displacement hulls. This stabilizing ballast can be on the order of multiple tons of lead, for a 12m (39 Ft.) boat. However, it creates two problems; one, that this gives the monohull a tremendous inertia, making it less maneuverable and reducing its acceleration. Secondly, if the boat ever fills with water, it will sink immediately, without question.

Australian Sailing Yacht Cowrie Dancer In Trouble In Southern Ocean, Australian and South African crew aboard

The Antarctic research vessel SA Agulhas is steaming through rough seas in the Southern Ocean to rescue the crew of an Australian sailing yacht, Cowrie Dancer, after its mizzen mast broke and a crew member was washed overboard in a storm with swells of between five and eight meters. A South African crew member, Carol Erasmus, 32, of Uvongo on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, was unhurt but exhausted on Tuesday after the ordeal, which took place about 700 nautical miles south of Port Elizabeth. The two other crew members, both Australian, were injured.

South African crew wanted for Clipper 07-08 to defend national pride! Durban Clipper will be competing again in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race when it sets off from Liverpool, UK, on 16 September this year. This will be the second time Durban Clipper has taken part in the race – having finished on the podium in a very creditable second place in Clipper 05-06. With the exception of the skippers, none of the crews are professional sailors and many of those taking part have never sailed before beginning their comprehensive race training. It is not too late for people from South Africa to sign up to take part in this 35,000-mile ocean race. Very large inshore racing yachts may have a crew of 30.

A Day Boat (dayboat) is exactly what it says - it is a boat usually used for Day Trips and therefore tends not to have any accommodation on board. Examples of uses of Day Boats would be to go for a trip along the English South Coast or go fishing. Some DayBoats will have sail as well as motors giving the choice of power depending on the conditions. Seychelles or Maldives?

Can anyone offer their opinion or experience in cruising either of these places? I understand that both are beautiful but can be pretty expensive. My wife and I are looking for somewhere to sit out a change of seasons between Sept and Jan before heading up the Red Sea in time for a Med spring/summer (during our Indian Ocean crossing from Oz).

How Do You Mark Your sailing yacht's Anchor Chain?

I thought it would be interesting to hear about the various methods used to mark anchor chain on a sailing yacht. I have seen a very effective method of having cable-ties every 10 meters - one for 10m. 2 for 20m, etc.
